Elk Lick Baptist Church
Information Here Was Compiled by Dr. D. L. Brewer
INTRODUCTION
Editors Note: This information and Minutes of the Elk Lick Church were taken from various places, the Library in Lee County and the Library in Owsley County. After careful examination of these minutes, I believe that Elk Lick and Rock Springs Baptist Churches were very closely connected. Elk Lick Church was a Primitive Baptist Church while Elk Lick Baptist Church (Above Photo) is Southern Baptist. It is my belief that the former Elk Lick evolved into Rock Springs along with a great deal of its members and the remainder then later formed the now present Elk Lick Baptist Church. I would welcome any opinions as to this theory. The minutes of the Elk Lick Church are very interesting and contain the names of many Owsley countians.
Since finding mention of the Elk Lick Church within the Biography of Joseph Ambrose in Spencer’s History of Kentucky Baptists, a good deal of time and effort have been spent in an attempt to locate additional information concerning the history and evidence of existence for the church. Within the work by Mr. Spencer, we find it recorded concerning Joseph Ambrose; He (Joseph Ambrose) was born in Bedford County Virginia, March 30, 1798. About 1808, his parents moved to Kentucky and settled in Pulaski County. Some four years later, they moved to Clay County. here young Ambrose, in early life, united with the Elk Lick Church, in what is now Owsley County, and was baptized by Abijah Gilbert. He was licensed to preach about 1826 and was ordained in February of 1827, by David Chenault and Thomas White.”
The earliest minutes and reference which we have been able to locate relating to the Elk Lick Church are the minutes that date to December, 1825. It is possible, and we are not ruling out the probability, that the church was in existence prior to this date. Mr. Spencer is correct in his statement concerning the date of license and ordination of Mr. Ambrose, and we would determine from this that there is the strong likelihood that he is also correct concerning the baptism and the baptizer of Dr. Ambrose.
ASSOCIATIONS
It is probable that the Church first belonged to the Tates Creek Association, organized in 1793, although we have not totally ruled out the possibility that the church may have at first been united with the North District Association since both Chenault and White were active in that Association as late as 1823 according to the records we possess.
By 1856, Elk Lick had become a part of the South Fork Association (this association formed in 1841) and hosted the Meeting in 1858.
Following the demise of the South Fork Association, Elk Lick became a part of the Irvine Association. In 1871, Elk Lick was one of the Charter members of the newly formed Booneville Association and reported 16 members with 6 baptisms during the year. The church reported to this association until 1899, when the Clerk of the Association within the Annual Minutes recorded concerning Elk Lick Church, Dissolved.
By 1925, Elk Lick had once again renewed her efforts to minister to her community and reported to the Booneville Association with Perlina Venable, John Bowling, Mary Mainous, Arkie Isaacs, Sophia Tyree, Daisy Addison and Sophia Neeley serving as the Messengers from the church. Arkie Isaacs is the Clerk and reported a membership of fourteen. This was the last year for the church to report until some years later.
MEETING PLACES
The first known meeting place of the church was apparently in a home, although we do not know whose, until the church took action to build a house in 1826. The building was to be built in the creek bottom on the Elk Lick. We go by tradition when we say that this location would have been on the Bond Farm at Elk Lick.
In 1829, the church agreed to move her meetings to Ed Evans who lived on Buck Creek near Booneville.
In 1849, the church took action to receive land that Levi Ross and Andrew Mays offered to give to the church. Ross lived near Levi which today bears his name in. Owsley County.
THE MINUTES
The minutes, in general, speak for themselves. They are in very poor condition and in many cases, near unreadable. There is the difficulty of deciphering names, as in the case of the first recorded minutes relating to AGGERS, AKERS, et. We are not yet certain, due to the flowing script style, which is the correct name. The names have been deciphered when possible but may yet prove somewhat incorrect. We have attempted to as near as possible record the name as it appears to appear in the minutes.
