Hiram Gabbard was born around [April 21] 1842, in the area that later became Owsley County, Kentucky. He married Mahala Wilson on the 13th of February, 1872 in Owsley County. They were the parents of Mary Ellis, born 1875; Cornelius, born July 8, 1877; Sarah Elizabeth, born July 23, 1879; and Rachel A., born December 9, 1884.
Hiram enlisted on the 4th of August, 1862 in Owsley County in Company E 14th Regiment, Kentucky Cavalry Volunteers under Capt. Sylvester Isaacs. While stationed at Irvine, Ky., in February of 1863, he contracted fever and measles which settled in his lungs and chest, the effects of which he never recovered from. While he was suffering from the measles, he was confined in the hospital and treated by Dr. Ansil Daniel who was the contract surgeon. Hiram was left with a hacking cough from the illness. He was discharged at Camp Wilson on the 24th of March 1864.
He moved to Jackson County, Kentucky, residing near the community of Annville. He later lived at Sturgeon in Owsley County. He was 6 feet tall, fair complected, light haired and blue eyed. He died June 1892 of consumption. Mahala died July 20, 1906.
