"Actually John McQueen , the revolutionary war soldier who could not read nor write and oldest McQueen in the family that I know of, was told how his name was written and pronounced during an interview in his old age, and he said he thought his name was QUINN which could have sounded like QUEEN with a Irish Accent. McQuinn would be transliterated of course as: "Son of Quinn", but most of his descendants have came to agree on McQueen as the family surname (at least the majority that I know) ... & I just try to go along with the MASS - it is not really important so long as we know who it is."

This online database had over 2 million names of soldiers from both sides of the Civil War. The database is searchable by which army served, the soldier's name, and the state the soldier served in. It's 'http://www.civilwardata.com/'. I DID find a Confederate record for B. F. ROSE who enlisted on 3/1/1863 at Wolfe Co., KY as a Corporal. On this date he was mustered into "E" Co. KY 14th Cavalry, but there is no record of the date & method of discharge. He was listed as being wounded 6/11/1864, & was taken as a POW on that day. Since OUR BENJAMIN lived in Wolfe Co., I'm ASSUMING this record belongs to him. Gail Berish email.

I might also add that his birth and death dates are both off as we show

Notes for MARTIN RAY ROWLAND:
Letter written 4/21/1999 to Banner Blue, creator of the Family Tree Maker's World Family Tree CD's:

Dear Banner Blue,

I would like to report an error I found within several of the FTM genealogy resources concerning my family. I first noticed this error on the World Family Tree CD, Vol. 2, tree #939. I found this error again online in the Carmack Homepage. Is there any way to get this connection straightened out so that any one who uses it, will have the correct version?

I am a direct descendant of this family, and have witnessed meeting these people first hand. My name is Betty "Gail" (Rose) Berish. I am the daughter of Ray Breckenridge Rose, s/o John Breckenridge "Breck" & Winnie Mae (Rowland) Rose. Here's the problem:

FTM reports the children/spouses of James "Sherman", b 1867, & Emma Florence (Ambrose) Rowland, b. 1875 as such:

Lester Rowland, b. private, m. Mollie Johnson
Winnie Mae Rowland, b. private, m. Breck Rose
Clarice Rowland, b. private, m. Roy Long
Ray Rowland, b. private, m. Ella Delena Rose
Bessie Rowland, b. private, m. Mr. Porter
Wanda Rowland, b. private

On the World Family Tree CD, it reports the above Ella Delena Rose, m. Ray Rowland with parents Breck & Winnie Mae (Rowland) Rose. This is where the errors begin.

First, Ray Rowland married Delena M. Rose, d/o Leander Crawford & Emma L. (Caywood) Rose. (These are my great-aunt & great-uncle.)

Ella Deleana Rose was truly the d/o Breck & Winnie Mae (Rowland) Rose, but she married James Coburn. (These are my aunt & uncle.)

Bessie Rowland never married Mr. Porter. Her husband was Lewis Robbins, b. ca. 1910. (These are my great-aunt & great-uncle.)

Wanda Rowland married Leland Porter. (These are my great-aunt & great-uncle.)

Is there any way to get this corrected?

Thanks ever so much!
Betty "Gail" (Rose) Berish

Note: I've researched the Birth records for any female named Golden who had children with the last name of Stamper from 1930-1950 in the state of Kentucky, and could find none listed in Morgan County. "John Delmar Anderson, BMC USN Retired

"June 2, 2003: I have tried to copy the following statement exactly as was written with the exception of adding periods at the end of sentences where needed for easier reading. The original statement is printed and all in capital letters. It looks as though this was done by some- one else & then signed by John Anderson.(Marjie Chirrick)

"SHIPMATE!

"TO FILL YOU IN. I SERVED ON THE USS ARIZONA IN 1937 PRIOR TO GOING TO CHINA IN THE ASIATIC FLEET. I SPENT 3 YEARS THERE & WAS SENT BACK TO THE PACIFIC FLEET, PEARL HARBOR IN 1940. THEN I WAS ASSIGNED TO THE HAWIIAN SEA FRONTIER & THE USS ELLET. ONE DAY CHIEF BOATSWAIN MATE GOETZ, AND I WERE WORKING OVER TOPSIDE FITTINGS TO MAKE THE ELLET MORE SEA WORTH, WHEN A SMALL BOAT CAME ALONGSIDE THE ELLET WAS BERTHED IN WEST LOCK. AN OFFICER WAS PIPED ABOARD AND IT TURNED OUT TO BE BOATSWAIN SANDERS OFF THE ARIZONA. HE AND GOETZ HAD SOME TRADING TO DO. THEN BOATSWAIN SANDERS NOTICED ME, THE FIRST HE SAID "ANDY WHAT ARE YOU DOING "HERE." I SAID I AM ASSIGNED TO THE ELLET. THEN SANDERS SAID "WHY I JUST LEFT YOU ON THE ARIZONA." SO I LAUGHED AND TOLD HIM THAT I WAS A TWIN AND THE SAILOR ON THE ARIZONA WAS MY TWIN. GOETZ TOLD SANDERS I HAD JUST COME BACK FROM CHINA AND WAS ASSIGNED TO THE ELLET. THEN SANDERS ASKED ME IF I WOULD LIKE TO TRANSFER TO THE ARIZONA IF IT WAS ALRIGHT WITH GOETZ. I SAID YES, BOATSWAIN GOETZ SAID IT WAS ALRIGHT. THEN THAT AFTERNOON AN ARIZONA BOAT CAME OVER WITH TRANSFER PAPERS. I SAID GOODBYE TO THE ELLET AND WENT TO THE FIRST DIVISION UNDER POP WILSON. I WAS THERE ABOUT 4 MONTHS, THEN BOATSWAIN SANDERS REASSIGNED AND REORGANIZED THE DECK DIVISIONS AND SENT ME BM2/C & DEWAYNE BARTH BM1/C TO THE 4 DIVISION. MY TWIN WAS DELBERT JAKE ANDERSON. HIS STATION WAS IN THE 5th DIVISION. WE WERE ALL ON BOARD WHEN THE BOMBING BEGAN: ON MY WAY TO TURRET 4 I SAW BOATSWAIN'S SANDERS & JIM MARTIN RUNNING FORWARD ON THE PORT SIDE. SHORTLY AFTERWARD I ARRIVED INSIDE TURRET 4 IN TIME FOR A BOMB TO BOUNCE OFF THE FACE PLATE AND EXPLODE BELOW. I SPOKE TO TURRET CAPTAIN CAMPBELL AND SAID THOSE WERE JAP PLANES. AND WE NEEDED TO ASSIST THE A-A GUN CREWS. HE AGREED - SO I TOOK OFF DROPPED OUT THE TRAP DOOR UNDER THE OVERHANG OF TURRET 4 AND HEADED FOR THE BOAT-DECK WHERE MY BROTHER WAS A 5"-38 GUN CAPTAIN. THERE WAS A TREMENDOUS EXPLOSION AS I REACHED THE 1/4 DECK LADDER, AND A TERRIBLY BURNED SAILOR LAY UNDER THE LADDER. I GOT HIM BY THE HAND TO GET HIM TO SAFETY, WHEN THE FORWARD PART OF THE ARIZONA BLEW UP. WE WERE THROWN BACK TOWARD THE STERN. THIS SAILOR I MANAGED TO SAVE; MY TWIN I COULD NOT. THE DECK WAS A HORRIBLE MESS - THE SHIP WAS AFIRE WITH BADLY BURNED MEN STAGGERING OUT OF THE FLAMES AND OTHERS WITH FATAL INJURIES. AFTER I GOT THIS FELLOW TO THE STARBOARD QUARTER DECK I WENT BACK FOR OTHERS. INCIDENTLY HE WAS FROM MIAMISBURG, OHIO. I SAW HIM SEVERAL YEARS LATER AT PEARL, HE WAS BADLY SCARRED & BURNED BUT ALIVE. AFTER GETTING WOUNDED MEN TO THE BOAT ON THE STARBOARD SIDE OF THE QUARTER DECK, LT CDR. FUQUA TOLD ME TO GET IN THE BOAT. THE ARIZONA WAS GOING DOWN. HE SHOVED ME IN. I SAID I COULDN'T LEAVE, MY BROTHER WAS IN THE FIRERY CAULDRON BY THE STACK. HE SAID TO ME THAT NO ONE UP THERE COULD HAVE LIVED & HE WAS SORRY. ABOUT THIS TIME THE BOAT WAS LOADED WITH WOUNDED AND DEAD. I LANDED ON TOP OF THEM FOLLOWED BY BARTH, JOHN EVANS & BILL GUERIN. THE BOAT THEN WENT ASHORE TO THE BUNKER ON FORD ISLAND. THOSE OF US WHO WERE ABLE, UNLOADED THE MEN THEN GOT THEM ON A TRUCK TO TAKE THEM TO A HOSPITAL. I WENT OUT TO THE WATER & SAW A WHALE BOAT DRIFTING OFF SHORE. ROSE, WHO FOLLOWED SAID HE WOULD GO WITH ME, WHEN I DECIDED TO GET THE BOAT AND TAKE IT BACK TO ARIZONA. WE SWAM OUT TO IT GOT IN AND GOT IT STARTED. AROUND US THE WATER WAS ON FIRE FROM OIL FROM THE SHIPS. I COXENED THE BOAT BACK TO ARIZONA AND WENT UP THE PORT SIDE. THE DECKS WERE AWASH AT THAT TIME. ROSE HELD ON TO A STANCHION WHILE I COMBED THE AREA FOR (ANY BODY); WE FOUND SOME DEAD PUT THEM IN THE BOAT AND TOOK OFF FOR HOSPITAL POINT; OVER ON THE STARBOARD SIDE UNDER THE CRANE, CLARENCE OTTERMAN WAS DOING ABOUT THE SAME THING, ONLY HE WAS TRYING TO SAVE PEOPLE WHO WERE STILL ALIVE AND BALANCED ON TOP OF THE CRANE. HE URGED THEM TO JUMP & HE WOULD FISH THEM OUT AND HAUL THEM INTO HIS LAUNCH. MIND YOU THE OIL FIRE ON THE WATER & THE FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS ON THE ARIZONA MADE AN IMPOSSIBLE SITUATION FOR OTTERMAN AND THE MEN ON THE CRANE. HOWEVER HE STAYED WITH IT AND MANAGED TO RESCUE THEM. OTTERMAN IS THE BRAVEST MAN I EVER SAW IN ALL THE ACTIONS I PARTICIPATED IN. HE NOW LIVES IN CENTER, TEXAS.
ROSE AND I SHOVED OFF FROM THE ARIZONA WITH OUR DEAD AND WOUNDED. STOPPED AT THE WEST VIRGINIA. WAS TOLD TO CONTINUE, CARRY OUT OUR ORDERS AND SO WE PROCEEDED -- TO A POINT SOME 50 YARDS OFF THE SEAPLANE RAMP ON FORD ISLAND. HERE OUR BOAT TOOK A HIT. IT CAME APART IN THE FIRERY WATER AND THEN I HAD TO SWIM. I LOOKED FOR ROSE. WAS UNABLE TO SEE HIM & FINALLY HEADED FOR SHORE. ON FORD ISLAND I WALKED BACK AND FORTH TO SEE IF HE HAD MADE IT BUT THAT WAS NOT TO BE. I STAYED ON THE RUNWAY THAT NIGHT WITH ANOTHER SAILOR - WALT GASKING (from VALDOSTA, GEORGIA) - WHO WAS MANNING A 50 CALIBER MACHINE GUN, WE HAD VISIONS OF STOPPING A JAP LANDING FORCE. THAT NIGHT A GROUP OF PLANES CAME IN TO LAND BUT MOST WERE SHOT DOWN BY GUNS ON THE ISLAND & SHIPS NEARBY. THE PLANES WERE OURS. THIS WAS A GREAT TRAGEDY DUE TO LACK OF COMMUNICATION AND SO GOOD MEN DIED.

"I DO NOT KNOW IF THIS IS ANY HELP TO YOU, BUT IT IS A BRIEF STORY WHICH CAN BE CONFIRMED BY BARTH, GUERIN EVANS AND OTTERMAN.

"(In his own hand writing, it is signed)
4th Div

"NOTES on C H EST E R C LAY R 0 S E"
from Marjie Anne Chirrick's research

"Information regarding Chester Clay Rose from my conversation on Saturday, February 22,2003 with Lt. Commander Vincent J. Vlach, USN (Ret.), a survivor of the USS ARIZONA.

"Chester Clay Rose US Navy Military Service Number 287-11-64

"Enlisted 12 July 1934 from Kentucky and first reported on board the USS Arizona on 22 December 1934

"San Pedro, California was Homeport for the USS Arizona

"The Arizona was anchored at San Pedro from 24 Feb - 15 March 1938

"Chester re-enlisted for 4 years on 13 July 1940 at Pearl Harbor

"19 December 1940 to 13 May 1941, he went to Mine Warfare School at
Receiving Station in San Diego, CA

"The Arizona was anchored at San Pedro for the last time 17 June - 1 July 1941

(Marjie said: One day during that time period, Aunt Millie took me on board to see my father.
He had given her family passes for that purpose.)

"Chester advanced to Boatswains Mate 151 Class on 1 October 1941

"Mr. Vlach and Chester had Shore Patrol together in Seattle, Washington in1939.
Their job was to go into the dives to break up fights among the servicemen. On one particular occasion, Chester, alone, took on 2 big burly guys and booted them out of one of these dives and into the street. Mr. Vlach said he knew he definitely wanted Chester with him if he should ever have a problem with big rowdies like those again.

"Chester, in the first division, was a Coxswain for one of the Arizona's motor launches. In the dark of night and during foggy weather, he had to listen carefully for the signal from the Arizona in order to bring the launch along side the right ship, BB-39, the number of the Arizona.

"Just prior to 7 December 1941, Chester was transferred from turret one to turret four. Turret one received a direct hit during the bombing on December 7th.

"7 December 1941
Chester survived the initial attack on the Arizona and he safely swam ashore on Ford Island. There he saw John Delmar Anderson, Boatswains Mate 2nd Class. Seeing a motor launch nearby, they both swam to it. They took the launch back to the ship, picking up men swimming as well as bodies from the water. Chester and John delivered them to Ford Island and then returned to the carnage. They headed for the West Virginia, which was in bad shape and picked up more survivors and bodies. They had turned the launch and were heading for hospital point when a bomb exploded. A direct hit on their boat, shattering it into the fiery water that surrounded them. John swam back to Ford Island and made it safely on shore. Chester was never seen again.

"Mr. Vlach said, "Chester might be buried as an Unknown. 56 bodies were buried as such, with 40 of these being from the USS Arizona."

"Chester was at first listed as "Missing in Action" and later reported KIA. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.

"Chester being 25 to 26 years old on December 1h of 1941 sounded right to Mr. Vlach and.......Chester was not married.

"He was 6'1" to 6'2" tall
He weighed 190 Ibs. or more. Had large shoulders.
He was a football player on the USS Arizona's Football Team.

"More Notes on Chester Clay Rose
"by Marjie Anne Chirrick's Research

"7 December 1941
Chester Clay Rose, Boatswains Mate 1st Class, 4th
Division (formerly 1st Division), USS Arizona

"About 6 months prior to December 7, 1941, Coxswain Edmondson had gotten into the third division, and thereby saved his life, because of a bit of sass to a senior petty officer. On a previous Sunday morning Edmondson had the duty of making sure his men squared away one of first division's messing and berthing spaces after breakfast. Edmondson was playing poker when Boatswain's Mate Second Chester Rose found him and told him to get his mess cooks on the job. Edmondson told Rose that the job had already been done, and he could go see for himself if he wanted to. The senior man didn't take kindly to that, especially since the coxswain, newly advanced to third class, seemed more inclined to hang around with his seaman friends than to join the petty officers' clique.
Within half an hour Edmondson was transferred to the
third division. Boatswain's Mate Rose, like the rest of first division, died on 7 December."

"On 1 October 1941, Chester Rose had advanced to Boatswains Mate First Class.

"Just prior to 7 December 1941, Chester was transferred from turret one to turret four. Turret one received a direct hit during the bombing on December 7th.

"Chester Rose survived the initial attack on the Arizona and he safely swam ashore at Ford Island. There he joined with fellow shipmate John D. Anderson, BM2c, in swimming to a launch. They then returned to the Arizona where they picked up additional bodies and men swimming. They delivered them to Ford Island and returned to the carnage. They headed for the West Virginia, which was in bad shape and picked up more survivors and bodies. They turned the launch and were heading toward Hospital Point when a bomb hit their boat, shattering it into pieces. Anderson swam back to Ford Island where he watched for Rose but that proved to be in vain. Chester Rose had survived the bombing of the Arizona. Because he did and because of his bravery, he undoubtedly saved the lives of many others and lost his own in the process.

Notes for RAY BRECKINRIDGE ROSE:
From Wallace Cleveland Rose's Memoirs:
"Ray sailed away and was a bugler on the U.S.S. General Hayes. I'm sure his shipmates loved him. Every time I think about this, I think of the words of one of Irving Berlin's wartime songs. The lines go like this:

Oh, how I hate to get up in the morning,
Oh, how I hate to get out of bed,
So the hardest thing of all,
Is to hear the bugler's call,
You gotta' get up, you gotta' get up this morning.

Someday I'm going to murder the bugler,
Someday I'm going to kill him dead,
And then I'll get that other pup,
The guy who wakes the bugler up,
And spend, the rest of my life in bed.

His bugler's rank was equivalent to a buck sergeant in the army. Word has it that he once got a slight reprimand for doing his swing version of reveille."

My dad told me he was given the nickname of "The Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company 'B'" after one of the poplar WWII songs of that time. - Betty Gail (Rose) Berish
