Notes for Susanna McIntire:
Susanna was an extraordinary woman. Her parents were William and Dianah McIntire. She was a stron gpioneer woman and did what she had to to survive. She was living in Letcher County, Kentucky when she was first married. She married Levi Whitaker, whose nickname was Litt.
One story I have heard of her is that she was stubborn. This is because when her husband, Litt (Levi) wanted to move the family to Texas, she did not want to move. He moved the family anyway, despite her objections. After the move, she told her husband that she did not want to live there and that she was moving back to Kentucky. She had one child, my great-grandmother, Victoria, at the time and was expecting her second child. She then proceeded to procure herself a horse and traveled alone, with the exception of her infant, which she carried with her. She made it back to Kentucky in spite of the fact that she was very pregnanat at the time of the trip. Her husband, realizing she meant business, moved back to Kentucky and the family remained there until his death.
Susanna had six children while married to Litt. Five of them survived. Litt passed away while relatively young. Her oldest children, Victoria and Richard were sent to live with her parents. She then married her neighbor, Hezekiah Branson, a widower with children, and had two more children while married to him. They divorced and she married Sim Watts. They had one child, Mona.
Susanna died while still young, by today's standards, and she is buried at The Carr Fork Cemetary in Letcher County, outside of Whitesburg near Carr Fork Lake. I have visited her grave. I also have pictures of her headstone.

Victoria Whitaker was born in Blackey, Letcher County, Kentucky on 28 September 1891. She was the daughter of Susanna McIntire and Levi Whitaker. She was said to have been quite a beautiful child and later a beautiful young woman.
When she was a child, her father passed away. Her mother sent her to live with her grandparents, William and Dianah McIntire. Her mother remarried their neighbor, Hezekiah Branson and had two more children, thius leaving her two older children to live with their grandparents.
Victoria was common law married to Ira Combs. No proof of a legitimate marriage has been found so I assume that this marriage was common law. Back in the late 1800's and early 1900's, it was a common practice for people to move in together and live as man and wife before the actual vows were made. This was because the preacher made rounds in the mountains and it may be some time before he got around to where you were living, so you lived together as husband and wife and were considered to be married as if the preacher had spoken the vows over you.
Victoria had two children while with Ira Combs. These were Alma and Clayton. Mr. Combs died a short time after Clayton was born and Victoria married (legitimately) shortly thereafter.
Victoria married George Dennis Mounts who was from Pulaski County, Kentucky. He was from Somerset, Kentucky. Teh couple lived in Letcher County for a few years before moving to Morgan County, Kentucky. My records show that at least three of their five children were born in Seco, Kentucky in Letcher County. The others were born in Morgan County, Kentucky. The children born to this union were: Opal, Jackie, Faye, George, Jr., and Sue.
After moving to Morgan County, George Mounts died. He is buried at Carr Fork Cemetary in Letcher County, near Blackey and outside of Whitesburg. Victoria remarried several years later to Virgil Davidson. He was a widower with seven children. Victoria helped him to raise these children, as if they were her own. I heard Virgil's children remark at her funeral that to them, she was the only mother they had ever known and remembered.
After Virgil's death, Victoria lived in Caney, Morgan County, Kentucky in her own home. During a thunderstorm, lightning struck her home and burned it to the ground. Only a few items were salvaged from her home. One was the bed on which my granmother, Opal was born. My great Aunt Sue has this bed in her possession in Caney, Kentucky. Victoria's home set high upon the top of a hill and I remember as a child that you had to park at the bottom and walk up to the top. It was a steep climb.
Victoria lived with her daughters after her age progressed and would go from one to the other for long periods of time but she mainly stayed with Faye. Towards the end, she suffered a stroke and was confined to the Maria Joseph Nursing Home in Dayton, Ohio. I remember my grandmother, Opal, taking her fried mush to eat. She would request some fried mush, and my grandmother would fry it and take it for her to eat. I used to visit her there as well. I was quite pregnant with my third child, on one of my visits and she told me plainly, "Jenny, honey, I think you are going to have another baby!" It was funny, I had not told her that I was expecting, but I was quite large at this time and she did not fail to notice.
Granny Victory, as I called her, passed from this life on 26 September 1986 at the grand age of 94 years old. She was two days from her 95th brithday. On her 90th birthday, she received a birthday card from the President of the United States, Ronald Reagan. It was a highlight and a fitting tribute to this strong pioneer lady that the highest office in the country would recognize her birth.
She is buried at Memory Hill Cemetary in Caney, Kentucky. This cemetary is a tribute to all the pioneer families in Morgan County. Mr. Wardie Craft designed the cemetary from an old cemetary that was present and assembled several of the old cabins from the area there as well. I spoke to him once about Granny, and he told me that he loved her very much and that she was a grand lady. He told me that he was honored to meet her great granddaughter. I was happy to sit and listen to him tell stories about the old days.

Notes for George Dennis Mounts:
By Jennifer L. Cook
I have taken a picture of George Dennis Mounts grave stone. I was in Kentucky and found the cemetary. It is located outside of Whitesburg, Kentucky in Letcher County. His grave is next to his mother-in-laws grave, Suzanne McIntire. I took pictures and have them on file.
George Mounts did not like to talk about his family. I have been unable to find out much about him except for where he was born and where he died and where he is buried.
William and George Mounts parents died while they were still young and they were placed with different people to be raised.

Notes for Opal Lola Mounts:
Opal Lola Mounts Johnston is my grandmother. She is the daughter of George Dennis Mounts and Victoria Whitaker Mounts. She is also the widow of Samuel Leburn Johnston. She was born in Seco, Kentucky in Letcher County. During her childhood her mother moved the family to Morgan County where she met my grandfather, Samuel.
When he was in his twenties, my grandfather, Samuel Leburn Johnston, saw my grandmother walking by on her way to the store and told someone that "I am going to marry that girl". He told the truth and married her while she was 13 years old. He married Opal Mounts in Cannel City, Kentucky. They lived there for a short time after marriage until they moved to Middletown, Ohio where there were plentiful jobs.
Opal, or Memie as I called her, is still alive today. She has always been a headstrong woman who could out work any man. She used to make all of my clothes while I was growing up. Sewing was just one thing she did well. She used to make draperies for not just the family, but for others who had seen her work and wanted the same attention to detail to grace their homes. She made many wedding gowns for people, to their specifications, and many a girl had her dream dress because of my grandmother. She could re-upholster any kind of furniture also. We were fortunate because, she could buy a couch at a garage sale for next to nothing, and make it into a beautiful piece of furniture for next to nothing, just labor involved and some material.
She was also very good at cooking. She could out cook many people and it did not matter if unexpected company showed up, she could still whip up a meal fit for a king at the drop of a hat. I heard her say more than once, "add more corn", which meant she was making enough to go around no matter how many showed up at suppertime.
She used to also refinish furniture. To be honest, I don't think there was much this little lady could not do and do well.
I have memories of going visiting in Kentucky. Memie and Poppy (Opal and Samuel) would drive down for a visit with family members still living down there. I remember visiting with Pearlie and Warren as well as Victoria.
Memie was distraught after the death of her husband. As time went by, she started getting progressively worse. She has Alzheimer's disease. She is physically fit but mentally, suffers greatly from this disease. She can not remember how to sew or anything else like she used to do. It is a shame to see her this way.
After her husband died, she went on many adventures around the world before she became ill. She twice flew to Europe, to visit her son, Richard and his family. She would return from these trips laden with gifts of chocolate from Switzerland, candy from Germany, and collectibles from all over. She always brought me spoons from the countries she visited because she knew that I collected them.
She was a real character in her time and loved by all who knew her.

Notes for Samuel Leburn Johnston:
By Jennifer Lynn Cook
Samuel Johnston was born in Morgan County, Kentucky. He is the son of Joseph Edward Johnston and Pearl Watson. When he was in his twenties, he saw my grandmother walking by on her way to the store and told someone that "I am going to marry that girl". He told the truth and married her while she was 13 years old. He married Opal Mounts in Cannel City, Kentucky. They lived there for a short time after marriage until they moved to Middletown, Ohio where there were plentiful jobs. Sam had already served in the CCC in California prior to marriage. I have a copy of his certificate of service in the CCC along with a copy of the picture of his camp showing the tent he slept in when working there. I also have a picture of him in his uniform. He was quite a dashing figure. He was one of the crew who made the Sequoia National Forest the landmark that it is today, making roads and various other things to help others come to visit it.
He moved to Middletown, Ohio to get work and found it at Armco Steel in Middletown, Ohio. He worked there for a time and later got employment at General Motors Inland Division. He worked at Inland until he retired. After getting his job at Inland, he purchased property in Franklin, Ohio on Beam Drive. The address was 580 Beam Drive, Franklin, Ohio 45005. This is where the family lived until his death. After his death, his widow, Opal, sold the house a few years later and moved to a bigger home on Poplar Street in Franklin, Ohio. She resided there until it became necessary to place her in a nursing home due to development of Alzheimer's disease.
Sam became ill soon after retiring and suffered several heart attacks. He was a heavy smoker, the type of cigarettes that had no filters. He was also a drinker, who enjoyed his beer and homemade wine. I remember as a child and an adult, seeing his "jug" with the balloon on it as it fermented into wine. He enjoyed making it as well as drinking it. He was a playful man, as I remember, who genuinely loved his family.
He died after a severe stroke which left him unable to speak. He had a blood vessel burst and the loss of blood is what caused his death. The doctor decided not to replace the blood since it was not healing and they had infused a lot of blood into him up to that point. My grandmother let the doctor make that decision and my grandfather then succumbed to the loss of blood.
He was a great man who worked hard and lived hard. I am getting many stories together to relate here from other family members.

Notes for Jennifer Lynn Pieratt:
Jennifer has been compiling the family history for well over 15 years now. She has been married twice and has three children. She is always interested in finding new relatives. She enjoys corresponding with others who are also researching the lines of the family tree. It is very encouraging to hear from other relatives who can fill in gaps in the family tree. Details are very important in research and confirmation of information just as important. It surely helps to know that others have the same information that she has and confirms the legacy of her family. Jennifer loves this hobby and it is her hope that she can leave a detailed family tree to her children to give to their children.
