Notes for ALICE JACKSON:

Alice Jackson and small baby died during the flu epidemic.  Her father, Rufus Jackson, got wagon and went to get her and the baby's body to bury at the homeplace but when he got there, she and baby had been buried the day before.  He came home without her.  An old picture of her and Howard was stolen from the house of Otis Mays during 2002 and not returned.  Aunt Heaslteen Botner Mayes said that the baby who died around the same time as Alice was named "Charles" and he had died a day or two before his mother, Alice, but the family knew Alice was dying and they waited to bury Charles.  They said that when she died, she said, "Charles, what are you doing here?".  Alice left a daughter, Cleta Mae, who grew up in Lee County.  Howard, Alice's spouse, married again and had another daughter. Rufus Jackson wanted to bring the Cleta Mae home with him and raise her but Howard said she was all he had left and would not let them have her.  Alice would hear the train coming and she would say, "Maybe Ma and Pappy have come."  They never did get to see her after she got sick.  The father of Howard Wilson told Rufus Jackson to leave Alice alone and not try to move her from her grave.  So he did.  Aunt Heaslteen said that Bill Burk (?) went with Rufus to, Krypton, Ky., somewhere around Hazard, but they did not get there before the burial.
