Notes for John C. Eversole:
After Jacob died, his son, Woolery continued to live in this house until his death, then it passed to Woolery's son, Major John C. Eversole. At least two substantial battles took place at the Eversole house during the Civil War. The first was in 1862 when about 100 Confederates surrounded the house at day break. The Rebels knew that Union Major John C. Eversole and some of his men were inside the house. The Confederates opened fire, shooting out the windows and shooting through the doors as the Yankees ran out and across the river to the woods. In the brush the Yankees took cover and returned the fire. At least one Confederate was killed but the Eversoles survived the first encounter.
They were less fortunate when a second encounter took place on May 2, 1864. Major John C. Eversole and his brother Joseph reportedly had left the service by this time and returned home to Krypton. The Rebels either were not convinced that the Eversoles had in fact given up the fight or sought out retribution for the Yankees earlier action. A substantial group from Caudill's 13th Kentucky Cavalry (then under the command of Major Thomas Chenowith) attacked the Eversole house with great force that spring day and were successful at killing both Major Eversole and his brother Joseph. The Eversole house was riddled with hundreds of bullet holes throughout the thick poplar logs. Many bullet holes remain obvious today. It is notable that Irvin Eversole, a relative of both men, was a Confederate and served briefly with Colonel Caudill's 13th Kentucky Cavalry, but it is not known where he was at the time of the fight.

She married (1) John Horton Amis July 08, 1856 in Breathitt Co. Kentucky, son of Wiley Amis and Elizabeth Bowling. He was born October 29, 1829 in Clay County, Kentucky, and died April 1916 in Crane Fork, Owley county, KY.
Notes for Sarah Eversole:
Sarah lived with Stephen her son and told of living with her grandmas Bolling who owned 2 laves, and little things that happened there. When the civil war was over and slaves were freed, these slaves didn't want to leave their Bolling home so they were given a cabin to themselves, a carriage and things to keep house with.
Sarah was a Faith healer. She had the gift of healing prayer. Out of ignorance folks called her a "Charm Doctor" "All I do is Pray" what some people don't understand has to be Magic you know, Sarah said about herself. This story told by her granddaughter Hazel Baker.
Justina, Hazel's mother said that she had heard the stories, but it was not until Sally came to spend her last years in their home, that she had any first-hand knowledge of the healing.
One morning Justina was getting breakfast, a man rode his horse into the yard. He had traveled the mountain roads all night, his horse was exhausted. He told Justina is baby was dying with a tumor on its head. Dr's were no help. Sarah was not up yet, but she overheard his story. She got up and came thru the kitchen, didn't say a word, but went outside to a little evergreen tree which was her place of prayer. When she came in she told the man, " I have "doctored on your baby", so you can go back home but don't take it to your doctor. I Tell people the patient may get worse before they get better. He was to let her know when he could. Before he got home the child had spasms but began to heal and the tumor disappeared. Justina said "That made a believer out of me". Sarah died of a stroke.

Tom Amis was Captain, John 1st Lt. and Wiley 2nd Lt. of the Amis Company of the 14th Kentucky Infantry of the U.S. Volunteers. This company was known throughout the War for bravery. It was made up largely of the Amis' and their relatives either by blood or marriage.
During the Amis-Strong feud (see More About Wiley Amis), John was the leader of the Amis faction. Alfred was killed in June of 1870 and John in October of 1870, both by the Strong family. The death of John Amis basically ended the feud and Wiley and some family moved to Kansas at that time. John and Alfred are buried on a hill on the old Amis famr close to the Buckhorn community of Perry, Co., KY. John Paul Amis and several family members still own the family farm there. Notes for James W. Baker:
Born on Cow Creek of Clay County to a single teenage Levina (Vinnie) Woods who I think was Rebecca Wilson Woods oldest child. He was named James Woods, as an adult changed his name to James Woods Baker. Vinnie told his father was a Perry county Baker named Jack. She never did marry and he was her only child.
His children told, he was born where Steve Gabbard lived and had a store in the 1820's and early 30's, if that is true he was born at Rebecca Wilson Woods. About 1837 or 38 she moved over the hill to Indian Creek, near the school. He became a school teacher, so he had a 8th grade education. 1842 she sold the 50 acres on Cow Creek her father Phillip Wilson gave her to David York.
James went to Clay county to teach school near the Owsley county line, Feb 25, 1850 age 20 he married Sarah Davidson (16) in Clay county, as James Baker. She was the daughter of John Davidson and Melvina Griffith, there youngest child. In the clay county 1850 census they lived near her parents. 1851 tax list shows them on Crane Fork of Cow Creek owning 150 acres, one horse, 2 cows. 1852 tax list 300 acres on Crane Fork, one horse, 2 cows, one calf. July that year they had their first child, Levina (Vinnie) named after his mother, Vinnie, July 1852
Their 2nd child my great great great grandpa, Andrew Jackson Baker was born in Grassy Branch of Indian Creek Jan 1854. James only owned 50 acres on Grassy Branch but later bought most of it, gave all 14 of his children a farm. He bought and traded land. He was a surveyor. Legend has it that he would be surveying land in Breathitt or Jackson counties, buy land there, later sell it for a profit.
He owned a water Grist Mill on Indian Creek. He was a Magistrate, a leader of upper Indian Creek and Grassy Branch. At the age of 19 his oldest son Andy went to Crockettsville in Breathitt county to teach school. At the end of the school year he married 16 year old Elizabeth Betty Amis, daughter of John H. Amis and Sarah sallie Eversole daughter of Billy Eversole and Elizabeth Bowling. Andy taught one more year of school, moved to Grassy Branch of Indian Creek in Owsley county on land his father James gave Him.
In 1879 when the twins Martha and Mary were less than 3 years old, James divorced Sarah told the family he was tired of her and married his son Andy's mother in law, Sarah Eversole Amis. He moved her to his Breathitt county farm. He had 2 children by her. James moved his 2nd wife from Breathitt county to Grassy Branch, built her a new house 1880. When Steve and Walter were teenagers he left Sarah but never did divorce her. He built himself a 2 room log cabin in Egypt Flat. It wasn't long until he had a young woman with a small baby daughter named Cally Huff, living with him, she wasn't much older than his oldest grandchild. Her name was Sarah Sal Ann Cornett. He told his son Andy, "she's just my housekeeper" it wasn't long until his housekeeper was pregnant.
James had 2 children by her. Carter and Sythie.
In 1903 Sarah Eversole Amis Baker died was burried in Cow Creek in the York Eversole cemetery beside her father. James was now a 74 yr old single man. His first wife Sarah Davidson died the next year 1905. James W. Baker's 3rd wife Sarah Sis Combs, widow of Dan Hill, sis died about 1913 and is in the Combs cemetery mouth of Upper Wolf Creek, burried beside her first husband Dan Hill.
James was in poor health almost blind, Andy had to bring Jim to this house. They put a feather bed in a box sled and some pillows and too him to Andy's house. He lived about 2 1/2 years after that died April 1916.

Notes for Abner Eversole:
Lexington Leader, Oct. 1, 1940
[article by John F. Day]:
"They say that a man born to drink of the lonesome waters of the hill country will return to drink of them again before he dies.
"Of most Kentucky mountaineers that is true, but not for Abner Eversole. He's pushing 98 now, and though he was born in the very heart of the hills--Chavies, in that narrow neck of Perry County where Breathitt and Leslie almost meet--and though he spent most of his life in those and adjoining counties, he has lived in Lexington for 20 years with never a touch of homesickness.
"'I like to visit back in the hills now and then,' he says, 'but I ain't much of a mind to go back to live. No, sir, I like it here where I've got electric lights, an' runnin' water, an' gas-heat. Guess I'm jest natcherly sp'iled, but I guess I won't go back to th' mountains to live er die.'
"When Abner Eversole was born 13 Jan. 1843, to Joe and Sally Bowling Eversole, the hills around his home at Chavies were covered for miles upon seemingly endless miles with virgin oaks and poplars and walnuts and maples and hemlocks and magnolias and hickories and lynns. There was game then, too. A man didn't have to hunt all day for a few measley squirrels or a rabbit. He could shoot deer within a few hundred yards of his home, and he didn't have to look very far for a bear.
Spun Wool Into Cloth
"When Abner Eversole was a youngster, and in fact for many years after he had grown to manhood, his people lived on the fat of the land. Theirs was a lonesome life, but a full one. His mother, and later his wife, Martha Lewis Eversole, clipped the sheep, carded the wool, spun it into thread and wove it into cloth. His father, and later he himself, made shoes from home-tanned hides. The family reaised their corn, and with it they fed their hogs, their oxen and themselves. A patch of bottom land, not rocky as now, produced vegetables a-plenty, and little cash was needed. Even when such an item as coffee was needed from the store, barter would do the trick.
"In 1861, news spread through the hills by word of mouth that the southern states had seceded from the union and that there was war. Now the mountain people, cut off from the rest of the state and the nation, were pretty much a law unto themselves. They were little concerned with what went on at Frankfort, or at Washington either for that matter, but their fathers and grandfathers had fought to create this union, and they weren't for seeing it destroyed. Furthermore, except in isolated instances, they weren't slave-holders. It was natural, then, that Abner, being 18 and as he says, 'full of vinegar,' went off to join the Union forces [Ky. 6th Cavalry].
For four years after that it was ride and skirmish and ride again. Most of the details of those four years have faded into oblivion for Abner Eversole, but there's one fight he hasn't forgotten, the Battle of Richmond. "Rebel buckshot pert nigh tore my leg off there,' he says. And Rebel buckshot and musket-balls and bayonets caused a lot of carnage during that two-day struggle in the early fall of 1862. For General Kirby's [Kirby Smith] fighting men in gray slipped down the new military road the Union forces had built over Big Hill and drove Brigadier General William Manson's 7,000 Yankees all the way from Richmond to Lexington. It was bloody hand-to-hand fighting that struggle from Richmond to Lexington, but Smith pressed his advantage, and General Lew Wallace, who had held Lexington with 20,000 troops, withdrew into Ohio.
"For two months Confederate forces held the Bluegrass, but then Smith moved his army to Virginia, and the Yankees returned to occupy Lexington and Richmond.
Lay In Hospitals
"For several weeks after that battle Abner Eversole lay in field hospitals, because the buckshot, let loose at close range, had torn away the muscles [he was listed as AWOL; after this he joined the 14th Ky. Cavalry]. And for many years, until comparatively recently in fact, he had to wear a rubber stocking.
"When the war was over and Abner Eversole was mustered out as [2nd] Lieutenant Eversole, he returned to Perry county, and in 1870 he began a term as county assessor. Before that, however, he went to the Green Hill academy at Booneville, Owsley county, for formal education needed to augment the little he had go[ne] during three three-month terms before the war. All in all, he probably never went to school more than four years in his life, but he was an educated man for the time and place.
Elected To Legislature
"After three years as Perry assessor, he moved to Laurel, and in 1877 was elected to the state legislature from the Laurel-Rockcastle district. From that time until 1888, when he went back to Perry and served for three years as county school superintendent, he was farmer, storekeeper, lumberman. 'Many's the thousand logs I've seen floated down the North fork of the old Kentucky,' he says. 'And many's the raft I've helped steer down to Frankfort.' He didn't realize it then, but those many thousands of logs he saw represented the beginning of the despoiling of the hills he had known, the beginning of long-time poverty for the mountains.
"In 1894, he was elected police judge of Jackson, resigning that post two years later to become a United States storekeeper and gauger. In the government service he worked 24 years, retiring 26[?] years ago on pension 'with as good a record as any man, I guess.'
"Abner Eversole didn't even start to grow old until he was 77, and during the last 20 years he has grown old as gracefully as any man can. He still enjoys good health, and gets around well, he reads the daily newspaper, he likes to talk to his friends and to sit on the front stoop in warm weather and at the front window in cool and watch the cars go by.
"No, he has no prescription for living a life as long as his. Members of his family mention the horseback riding he did for more than half a century, his regular hours, his eating of fruits and drinking of milk. But Abner Eversole just smiles and says, 'It's hard to say why one man lives longer than another.'"

15 APR 1888 in Perry Co., KY Bushwacked by Bad Tom Smith
Occupation: Attorney and Merchant in Hazard, Perry Co, KY
Note: Leader of the Eversole family in the "French/Eversole" feud
Note: The murder of Joseph C. Eversole: "The Eversole men were warned to watch out for Tom (Smith). The warning was well founded. On April 15, 1888, Joe Eversole, his brother-in-law Nick Combs and Judge Josiah Combs were riding toward Big Creek. It had been quiet in Hazard for several weeks, and people were beginning to hope that the feud had died down. But as the Eversoles rounded a turn on the road, they were hit by a burst of gunfire from a thick patch of woods above the bend. Joe Eversole was knocked from his horse, his body riddled by eight bullets. Nick Combs was similarly hit. Josiah Combs was nicked and had five bullet holes in his clothes, but managed to escape. As he fled, he saw two men, neither of whom he could identify, run from the woods, fire repeatedly into the bodies of the fallen men, and then go through their pockets. Notes for Harry Eversole:
SHOT FULTON FRENCH IN BREATHITT COUNTY, KENTUCKY. THIS FINISHED THE WAR
BETWEEN THE FRENCH AND EVERSOLES. FULTON SHOT HIS FATHER IN 1888.
Fulton French left Leslie County and lived for a while in Jackson,
Kentucky, and later in Clark County. He always wore a bulletproof
jacket after the feud was over. About a year after he left Leslie
County, he entered a hotel in Jackson, Kentucky and met Susan
Eversole, still dressed in black, along with her son, who was a small
one armed fellow. Mr. French stepped up to Susan and said, "Good
Morning, Mrs. Eversole."
Immediately, the son drew a gun and knowing of the bulletproof jacket
shot French in the spleen. A year and a few days later French died as
a result of this wound. Thus, one of the worst feuds ever to happen in
Kentucky finally came to an end.

[Sbakerfamily.FBK]
Betty had a rough life, she endured the death of her father at an early age, (John Amis) and saw her mother become her mother in law.
She also saw the death of her children and grandchildren. As a woman I don't know how she endured it, her faith in God must have been tremendous. I'm still searching for stories about Betty. But I know I would have loved her dearly.
She died at the age of 74 of Appoplexy and is buried in the Baker graveyard next to her husband on the Crane Fork.
Notes for Andrew Jackson Baker:
Andrew Jackson Baker lived on the Crane Fork. Have tried unsuccessfully to find his gravestone on the property where he lived, more than likely the logging they have done has buried his gravestone forever. A future trip will be made to find it again. Wife Betty and son Will are also buried in the same place.
Andy took care of his father in the last years of his life, saddened by his father's indescretions. My great great grandpa was the finest of men. Everyone that knew him loved him. Betty and Andy operated a store and Andy also taught school. His grandkids were always excited to see him come. When Betty got older she couldn't walk so Andy would carry her everywhere they went. He once walked 10 miles in the rain to see one of his children. This tells me of his deep love for his family. He buried several of his children before he died, Will that was killed at his saw mill by explosion in 1907, and saw the death of several of his grandchildren, Fanny that was killed by gunshot in a terrible tragic accident., he told his son Jim who was overcome with grief when his daughter Ethel died, Jim you need to come out of it or not only have I lost a granchild but I'll lose a son too.
Andy loved the fiddle so much so that he made his own, (it's still in the family and a beautiful piece of work!!).
My Uncle Charles is the spitting image of my great great grandpa.
According to his death certificate he died of appolexy at the age of 83.
It warms my heart and soul to hear stories about Andy and to know of the great emotional trials he endured and conquered.

"Aunt Polly was my dad's sister-in-law. The Clack brothers had helped her and her family when Luther Clack died in Kansas leaving a family of five children. She and her children were brought to Kingman where the brothers had a house for her family. Her children Alta 19, Vida 17, Ehtel 15, Wm 10, and Thelma 6, when their father died. They came out about 1910 or 1912.
The home was just one door down from our home on Oak Street and next door to the Little Red School House. By the time I came into the family all her children were grown and all but Thelma were married. They lived in Kingman and helped support Aunt Polly.
I dearly loved Aunt Polly; she was a large woman rather plain and oh so sweet. What you saw with her is what you got. She was a very good cook, kept a nice house and was always jolly. Vida and Thelma were real society gals and rather snooty, why I could never figure out since what they had had been provided by the Clack brothers. Aunt Polly was always greatful for their hulp, but the girsl expected it. When I was sick Aunt Polly would take care of me, she would hold me and rock me to sleep. I would cuddle up to her." Downs was founded in 1879 when Major William F. Downs brought the Central Branch Railroad into the area. Local men named the new town Downs in honor of the rail builder. The Railroad laid out the town at the "Y" junction where the tracks split, with one branch going southwest toward Osborne, where it follows the South Fork of the Solomon River west, and the other northwest following the North Fork of the Solomon.
Downs sprang up from the prairie almost overnight. In its boom, the railroad had eighteen trains running daily. With both passengers and freight, the trains were constantly on the move. Downs also had one of the largest roundhouses in the state with a capacity for ten locomotives, and, with its well balanced turntable, could turn the heaviest locomotive with ease.

Notes for James W. Baker:
[Sbakerfamily.FBK]
I was little but I remember my great grandpa coming to our house in Indiana to visit, by that time he was using a crutch under his right arm.
James W Baker had a short military stint during the Spanish American War. A member of the mounted cavary
The stories I've heard about Great grandpa are, that he was a genius when it came to fixing anything. He was a stone mason and helped to build a lot of the now standing buildings in Booneville. He puzzled a lot of people when it came to solving problems. He used mathmatics in figuring out how to build and solve problems that no one else could solve. He was a hard worker and well admired by all those that knew him.
He had a way with animals I'm told. He had a cat and dog they would line up when he milked the cow and wait until he told them it was okay for them to drink out of their saucers. I have a picture of him milking that cow and the cat sitting there waiting to be told he could drink his milk!!
He was a perfectionist. One day his brother Rob wanted to go hunting with him, he begged him to go, Jim said okay Rob you can go but if you lag behind I'm leaving you. So they went hunting. Of course Rob lagged behind so Jim said Rob what am I going to do with you, you're a burden on Mom and Dad you're just no good for nothing, I guess I'll just have to put you out of your misery, he then loaded his gun, poured the powder in but dropped the ball into his hand. Aimed and pulled the trigger, Rob fainted over dead and Jim thought he had killed him!! Needless to say Rob didn't ask to go hunting with my great grandpa anymore!!!!
Another story is his son Clarence got into trouble so he told him, "Clarence what am I going to do with you, you just won't listen, I guess I'll have to hang you", he took Clarence to the back of the barn, got a rope, slung it over a tree, and said "Son you have any last words", Clarence mumbled out, "Dad would it be alright if I Prayed"!!!!! Needless to say he did not hang Clarence!!!
I don't mean to paint a bad picture of James Baker but he expected people to use common sense and when they didn't he couldn't figure them out!!!!
He made all of his kid memorize the ballad of California Joe.
Later in his life he moved from Kentucky to Ohio where he worked with his sons At the Army Signal Corps in Dayton Ohio. His funeral was at Elk Lick Baptist Church and he is buried beside his wife at Shepherd Cemetery. I would have liked to have known my great grandpa I'm sure I would have been a better person for it and I'm here to see that his memory stays lit in the minds of his family

Notes for Addie Hazel Bowman:
My great grandmother was a fun loving woman. She enjoyed life. She was a mid-wife. She birthed more babies in Owsley county than probably any doctor there at that time. Great grandpa bought her a horse to travel on when she birthed babies. I remember her as a little girl a a frail woman battered by a hard life and hard work, but still high spirited and full of life. She had long beautiful silver hair that she wore in a long braid down the back of her head. Her and my great grandfather were very well respected and thought of people in Owsley County. She kept a record of her births that a member of the family has, so far the only one I have is this one:
Cow Creek:
May 14, (cannot make out the year)
Baby, Norma Alvena Peters
Father Charles Peters, born Ricetown KY age 23
Mother: Edith Mayes, born Cow Creek, age 21

Hello Uncle Jim,
I am sure glad to hear from you. How are you now? It has begun to rain up here a little the first we have had in a long time. and everything is burned up and I hope rhuematism isn't bothering you.
I have just come back from Aunt Addie's and she just fine only still coughing a little not bad though. I think she is going to pick some berries tomorrow.
Don and the boys play together all the time and they really have a good time playing too.
Sunday before last Aunt Addie, Nevlyn mother and daddie took them all swimming and then again last Sunday then Wednsday Nevelyn and I took all the boys in. They sure had a good time. And Don is sure some "Water Dog". He can go under water and stay nearly as long as I can.
Aunt Addie made them a swing today I believe that Ronald Lee , Don and Kenneth had rather play than anybody.
It really has been hot here for the last week. Its been so hot you can't sit through the day and can't lay still through the night.
How are the Gen's? Just as mean as ever I bet. Say you don't know how much I miss little Gen Uncle Jim. Everywhere I went she went and it gets pretty lonesome sometimes.
Mother and Dad said to tell you hello and they would like to see you.
Well I have got two more letters to write and I had better close because its getting a little late and I have to get up early in the morning and help can beans.
Mother said to tell you to give Gen a big hug for her and to be good. Excuse this bad writing I,m writing on a cantalope across my lap.
My dearest Uncle
From Lucille

My grandfather had many passions, but the one he loved the most was his ability to lead people to the Lord, I don't know how many he reached, but the numbers have to be in the hundred's, I know because I'm one of them.
Notes for Geneva Taylor:
My grandmother was a Saint, she lived her life for her family, and for God. I never heard her say a bad word against anyone.
She was a great cook. Loved to embroider and taught me how at a young age. Everyone that knew her loved her.
Being the wife of a Pastor wasn't easy but she followed my Grandpa when he was called to Preach in various locations. She was involved in the Eastern Star and was always there when someone needed help.
My greatest memory of her was the love she gave to me and her sweetness and the fact that she cared so much for my Salvation.
I always think and remember this verse when I remember my Grandma because this is the way she was,
Proverbs 31: 10-31
I miss you Grandma.

Notes for Guido B. Sartori:
Eulogy for Guido Sartori
Dad worked for his father in the family grocery store. He attended Junior College in Virgini a, MN before finally enrolling in St. John's University, Collegeville, MN, graduating wit h a business degree in Economics. He played on their 1937 championship football team and wa s as proud of that university as a man could be.
After college he was working in a local bank in Buhl when he received a call from a friend and soon after left for Phoenix, AZ to work for the Valley National Bank. Later, after another opportunity with the bank, he found himself in the small town of Kingman, AZ. It was about as far away from northern Minnesota as a young man could be. It turned out to be the right place at the right time as that's where he met his first wife Polly. It was from here that he enlisted in the US Navy in 1942. He asked Polly if she would wait for him. She said "sure, if you marry me first". The rest is history!
After the war, relationships developed back in Buhl impacted his life again, as Paul Sartor i asked him to join a then, 6 year old Italian Cheese company here in Plymouth, called S&R . For the next 41 years, as a partner in the business, he did his part to make the company a success.
Dad and Polly raised 3 children, Lou, Vida and Marcia. They also lost an infant daughter, Polly Alice, shortly after her birth in 1958. Then, tragically in 1959, our mother Polly died at the age of 39, and dad was left to raise the 3 of us alone.
About the same time, Mary Ladwig's husband Gordy also left this world much too early. She was left to raise 3 daughters, Kay, Donna and Beth on her own. Ironically, the gravesites of Polly and Gordy were right next to each other. So it seems almost inevitable that Guido and Mary would meet, fall in love, marry, and raise our version of the Brady Bunch. They did the Brady's one better as they added 5 more children before they were finished: Ann, Mary, Laura , Tony and Lisa.
What kind of person was dad? He was a private man. He was a man of integrity. He was dignified and gracious. He was kind and generous and was liked by everyone he met. He loved his family above anything else. I don't remember him every saying anything negative about anyone. Nothing made me prouder that the hundreds of people who have approached me over the years and said "your dad is one of the nicest people I ever met". He had a good and somewhat dry sense of humor. I'd like to think that he passed that on to me. He was still making jokes the night before he died.
He loved his family very much. He loved both of his wives and, when talking about Polly and Mary a few weeks ago, he described himself as having hit 2 home runs. He had great respec t for his parents and the sacrifices they made.
He was proud of his children's accomplishments, but he never boasted about his own accomplish ments. He supported us in whatever we decided to do with our lives. Vida remembers how supportive he was when she decided to become a nurse. That support came full circle recently, as Vida became his primary health care provider is his final months.
He found time to spend with all his children, no matter how many were living at home at the time. He also had an uncanny way of "tuning us out" when necessary to maintain his sanity.
He loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His face would just light up when they came to visit. He made his sons and daughters-in-law feel like his own children.
He was a stern father at times, but usually he just used his imposing presence to get his point across. Even when we did things that must have disappointed him, he never brought those things up to us later. He had a strong work ethic and we would like to think he imparted that in all of us.
Even though his heritage was Italian, he was a proud American. That was something he surly learned from his father, who became a naturalized citizen and was very active politically in his community. He volunteered for duty in WWII and remained active in the American Legion all his life. He even bought American. Many of us remember the controversy raised when our brother Tony bought a Japanese car!
He was a man of strong faith and I think he lived his faith by example. It was a great comfort to him at some crucial times in his life: losing his first wife, his second wife and facing his own battle with cancer.
He loved to travel and had a chance to see much of the world. He made several trips to Italy , visiting not only the sights, but also family. He loved to play golf and enjoyed the friends he made while playing. He introduced his wife Mary to the game and they played together a lot, especially when they wintered in Florida. Ironically, the last time dad played golf was the day mom died. She rode with dad in the cart and joined their daughter Lisa and her husband Kevin on a very special last day.
Dad didn't like to complain. Even when his cancer pain was intense, he would keep the pain to himself. If we noticed the pain and said "did you take your pills?" he would say "it's 7:30 and I'm not supposed to take them until 8:00!"
Although his battle with cancer was difficult, it did give us all time to say some things we may have never found the right time to say before. On his last night I was able to tell him he was the greatest dad a son could have ever had, and if given a choice, I wouldn't have picked anyone else. I think we all feel the same.
