Colson Duff ca 1911
Colson Duff was born July 9, 1814 in Clay County, now Perry County, Kentucky. He was Daniel’s first child born in Kentucky and he died March 18, 1911. I don’t know why this date conflicts with the date of death of William Henry Young’s history. He married in 1836 to Elizabeth Gilbert, who was born October 12, 1815 in Virginia. She was the daughter of Thomas Gilbert. Elizabeth died July 7, 1898.
Colson owned a large tract of land on Grapevine Creek in Perry County, 1500 acres. During the Civil War, a group of men came by his home, robbed him and intended to take him away, for whatever purpose he was lucky to never find out. He asked if he could go and say goodbye to his family. He escaped out of the back door and ran to the woods as he was being fired upon by this group of men.
His escape took him to Owsley County, Kentucky, where he built a log house, barn, black smith shop and planted an orchard on 500 acres of land on Wolf Creek. His family did not see him for the next three years until he returned to take them to their new homestead. He traded 1500 acres of land in Perry County for a horse and cow. Colson is buried in the Griffith Cemetery on the South Fork of the Kentucky River, the old Gilbert cemetery.
