Submitted by Ella Francis Bowman Addison
Generation No. 1
1. HENRY B.5 BOWMAN (ELIJAH "SR"4, CORNELIUS (NEAL)3, JOHN2, GEORGE1) was born 1820, and died 1900. He married (1) RACHEL PLUMMER, daughter of SAM PLUMMER, JR.. She was born 1823, and died 1900.
Notes for HENRY B. BOWMAN:
It was told to me by Blanton Bowman, son of Bluford Bowman and grandson of Henry Bowman, that Henry B. Bowman had a son (name I do not know at this time) who was called by the Rebels to take them across the river (near the place where the Booneville-Jackson bridge is located at this time) and when the child reached the middle of the river, he was thrown out of the boat and beat to death. His body was found at the bar below the location of the bridge now. This child was 9+ years of age. I had never heard this from dad and did not know it when granddaddy, L. Carter Bowman, was still living. Would like to recall granddaddy back for a short time and ask him some questions about his family. At this time, I have no idea where this child is buried.
Tinsley Bowman always said that three of his aunts went West and only one returned for visits afterwards. Some of his aunts and uncles were unknown by him and I could get no information about their families from Dad.
Children of HENRY BOWMAN and RACHEL PLUMMER are:
2. i. LANDON CARTER6 BOWMAN, b. October 12, 1865; d. June 10, 1955, Booneville, Owsley County, Kentucky.

vii. LUCY ANN BOWMAN, b. September 19, 1849; m. HENRY EVANS.
viii. LEWIS BOWMAN, b. December 26, 1851.
Notes for LEWIS BOWMAN:
Robert Smith told me, Ella Bowman Addison, that this was the child who was killed by the rebels, while he was bringing them across the river in a boat. He was only 9+ years of age. The rebels had called him to come across the river with the boat and bring them across. When they got middle of the river, the rebels beat him with their gun butts and killed the child. He was found later down the river. I have been unable to locate his grave and Dad, Tinsley Bowman, said that he had never heard this from his dad, Landon Carter Bowman, but this was told to me by Bluford Bowman's family. This is probably true as there is no record of this child after his birth, which is listed in the old Bowman Family Bible of Landon Carter Bowman, in possession of Ella B. Addison.

Notes for D. W. BARRETT:
During the War and just after Tinsley & Lena Gertrude Botner Bowman got electricity, they had asked Uncle D. W. Barrett for a refrigerator. Each merchant was only allowed a limited number during a period of time. When the refrigerator arrived, Uncle Daniel gave it to Moffatt Barrett's family to replace their old one. This was in the 1940's. Uncle Daniel had a hardware store during this time. We had a drilled well and the only way of keeping milk and butter cold was to put it in a cellar that was built under the house. Almost every weekend, Mom would buy blocks of ice from the iceman of Beattyville and keep it in a washing tub with army flannel blankets to cover it to keep it from melting as long as was possible.

Notes for RUBY IRENE BARRETT:
Ruby was divorced from Charlie Palmer and was the only child of Ralph Barrett and Callie Evans. She died from lung cancer. During the school year, Ruby would stay with Aunt Mattie Bowman Barrett and she would send Ruby to school. Each year she would take Ruby out to Heniretta Wilder Sherrill's dress shop and buy her all new school clothes at one time. We always thought that was something as we got very few store-bought clothes as Mom always made ours unless it was coats or something special.

Notes for JAMIE DONALD BOWMAN:
Jamie Donald Bowman was first married to Louise Brandenburg and had a son named "Timothy". He spent time in prison and once worked at the Governor's Mansion in Frankfort for Carroll. I believe he was in prison for killing his second wife and mother-in-law. He was bitten by a mad dog when a small child and they felt that the shots he had to take caused him mental problems. He was always putting our kittens in the rain barrell, trying to drown them. Mom always had to keep an eye on us children when he was around. When Uncle Melvin was bedfast, you could tell by his eyes that he was deathly afraid of Jamie Donald. One time the FBI came to our house after watching it for some time looking for Jamie Donald as my brother was named James Raymond and they thought it was the same person. One morning early when we got up, Golden found the authorities looking around our barn for Jamie Donald. I don't know where they finally found him. Jamie Donald Bowman died from lung cancer at the Owsley County Nursing Home where Monroe "Bo" Barrett helped him get in. Bo stopped by and got Jimmie Ray to go with him to the nursing home to see Jamie Donald shortly after he entered the nursing home and he lived a short time afterwards.
