Generation No. 1
1. C
ORNELIUS B.1 BOWMAN was born 1740 in Shenandoah Valley, VA. Or WilkesCounty, Nc, and died January 05, 1826 in Booneville, Owsley Co., Ky.. He married
S
USANNAH ?. She was born 1745 in Va. Or Wilkes County, Nc, and died May 13,1810 in Owsley Co., Ky. Or Elliston, Madison, Ky.
Notes for C
ORNELIUS B. BOWMAN:
Cornelius Bowman and wife, Susan, and James Moore and wife, Ellender, with their
sons and daughters were among the first settlers in Madison Co., KY.
The Bowmans settled on Muddy Creek near the Estill County line. The Moores, by
gradual stages, moved up the Kentucky River and became the first settlers at (now)
Booneville in Owsley County in the South Fork Country.
The sons and daughters of the Bowmans married sons and daughters of the Moores.
In those days there were few other people in the area.
The children settled in the South Fork Country. As time passed, the grandchildren of
the Moores and Bowmans became the ancestors of a great many families now living
in Owsley, Jackson, and surrounding counties. To name a few families that in part,
descend from the Bowmans and Moores would have to include the following families:
The Davidsons, Coles, Wilsons, Reynolds, Estridges, Eversoles, Callahans, Evans,
Penningtons, Gabbards, Frosts, Lynches, Roses, Reeses, Brandenburgs, Pruitts,
Roberts, McKinneys, Spencers, Lawsons, Combs, Peters, Sparks and many more.
The Bowman DNA project is now underway under the direction of descendant Henry
Bowman. Check out familytreedna.com for more information.
I now believe our Cornelius was from one of the several German Bowman (Bauman)
families of the Shenandoah region. But which one? There are at least three or four!
There are several interesting hints that point toward a link to the Jacob Bowman
(Bauman) (m. Elizabeth Ungert) clan, but nothing definite.
Ed Bowman also reports finding a reference to an Elizabeth Bowman marrying a
William Waters on Dec 8, 1778 in Wilkes Co., NC. The clerk was William Lenoir and
the witnesses were Moses Bowman and Isaac Elledge. (Note: Cornelius' grandson
William (s/o John) married Malinda "Mandy" Waters 1807 Clay Co KY; the Waters
family was evidently connected to our Bowmans, suggesting that Moses Bowman
was some early relative of Cornelius??)

Va. Or Wilkes, Nc, and died October 03, 1845 in Or 15 Oct 1835 @ Estill Co., Ky..
He married SARAH MCMONIGLE November 28, 1816 in Estill Co., Ky.. She was born
1796, and died October 30, 1865.
Notes for ELISHA WILLIAMSON BOWMAN:
In 1804, Elisha Bowman was assigned to the Louisiana Territory by Learner
Blackman, who was in charge of the Natchez District. After a short stop in New
Orleans, where his preaching was not well received, he proceeded westward. By the
end of his first year (1806), he had started a Methodist Society at Opelousas which
boasted 17 members. The Opelousas church has sometimes been called the
"Mother Church" of Louisiana Methodism. Rev. Bowman’s ministry reached from the
Acadiana area up to central and northern Louisiana.
ELISHA WILLIAMSON BOWMAN born 25 Dec 1775 VA, died 3 Oct 1845 Estill
Co., KY; son of Cornelius Bowman Sr. (b. 1740; also a Methodist preacher) and
Susannah "Betsy" ____ (some say Abbott, but her maiden name is unproven; it might
have been Williamson). Following his missionary work in Louisiana, Elisha returned
home and settled on Cawood farm on the River above his father in old Madison Co.
(now Estill Co.) in1815. He married 28 Nov. 1816 Estill Co. KY to Sarah "Sally"
McMonigle born 1796 Estill Co. KY, died 30 Oct.1865 Estill Co., KY. Sarah was
daughter of Sarah Susan Pyle and Barnett "Barney" McMonigle.
You might be interested to know that, in addition to his father, two of Elisha's brothers
were also Methodist ministers: Thomas Bowman b. 1782, and Jacob A. Bowman Sr.
b. 1784. Like many of other children of Cornelius and Susannah, Jacob and Thomas
settled in what is now Owsley Co., KY.

Notes for S
ELDON FLETCHER BOWMAN:Seldon was a Captain in the 14th Ky Cav., Company C. fought with Bill Strongs
regiment in several insurrections against the 13th Ky Cav. CSA
HDQRS. FIRST DIVISION, DISTRICT OF KENTUCKY,
Lexington, April 17, 1864.
Col. J. M. BROWN,
Commanding at Irvine, Ky.:
COLONEL: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of
16th instant. I have been fully satisfied for several days that no formidable invasion
could be made through the eastern part of the State; a great deal of alarm on the part
of citizens brought about by rumors of an invasion, put in circulation by the friends of
the rebellion. I am confident that the plan proposed by Capt. Seldon F. Bowman, if
carried out, will effectually rid the eastern border counties of marauders and guerrilla
bands. Let the captain make application to the Governor in proper form, with your
indorsement, and forward to these headquarters, and I will give it full approval and
urge its adoption. Colonel Gallup fought the enemy on the 14th instant; drove them to
Salyersville; killed and wounded 24, among them Col. E. F. Clay; captured 50, 100
horses, 200 stand of arms. Colonel True, with Fortieth Kentucky and Eleventh
Michigan, should have been at Salyersville last night. True captured 6 rebels beyond
Mount Sterling. I have full confidence in your ability, and will leave to your own
discretion and judgment the disposition of your regiment.
Very respectfully,
E. H. HOBSON,
Brigadier-General.

Fourteenth Cavalry
KENTUCKY
(3-YEARS)
Fourteenth Cavalry. -- Col., Henry C. Lilly; Lieut.-Col.,
Andrew Herd; Majs., Joseph W. Stivers, Alfred Smith, John C.
Eversole, Robert T. Williams.
The organization of this regiment was begun in the summer of
1862, the companies being promptly recruited in the counties
of Estill Owsley, Bath, Montgomery, Clark, Madison, Rockcastle
and Powell. They assembled at Mt. Sterling in July, but
before any organization had been effected, or arms obtained
the Confederate forces under Gen. Kirby Smith came into the
state.
The fighting which took place at Big Hill and Richmond caused
the unarmed men of the regiment to abandon their camp at Mt.
Sterling and for a time the organization was practically
disbanded, though some of the men were held together and
fought against Morgan at Brookville, Ky., as he retreated from
Augusta, in September.
After the Confederates left the state the men of the regiment
reassembled at Mt. Sterling, where four companies -- A, B, C,
and D -- were organized and mustered into service Nov. 6, and
the regiment was completed in Feb. 1863, the other companies
being mustered in at Irvine Feb. 13. The services of the
regiment were almost entirely in eastern Kentucky.
In Jan. 1863, Maj. Stivers, with 150 men of the regiment,
dashed upon a band in Powell county, captured its leader and
11 men, and took their horses, guns, etc. The regiment was
engaged in numerous skirmishes, and was continuously marching.
Among its battles was the one at Dutton's Hill in Pulaski
county, near Somerset, when Confederate Gen. Pegram, with
about 2,500, was attacked by the Federal troops under Gen.
Gillmore. It also went on the East Tennessee campaign under
Gen. Burnside in Sept. 1863, and participated in the hardships
and dangers of that campaign.
The 1st battalion was mustered out Sept. 6, 1863, and the
remainder of the regiment in March 1864.

DDIE HAZEL BOWMAN:Told fortunes with coffee grinds, this is fact, verified it with her son, my
Uncle Hubert but this was before she got salvation according to him.
My great grandmother was a fun loving woman. She enjoyed life. She
was a mid-wife. She birthed more babies in Owsley county than
probably any doctor there at that time. Great grandpa bought her a
horse to travel on when she birthed babies. I remember her as a little
girl a a frail woman battered by a hard life and hard work, but still high
spirited and full of life. She had long beautiful silver hair that she wore
in a long braid down the back of her head. Her and my great
grandfather were very well respected and thought of people in Owsley
County. She kept a record of her births that a member of the family
has, so far the only one I have is this one:
Cow Creek:
May 14, (cannot make out the year)
Baby, Norma Alvena Peters
Father Charles Peters, born Ricetown KY age 23
Mother: Edith Mayes, born Cow Creek, age 21

AMES W. BAKER:[Sbakerfamily.FBK]
I was little but I remember my great grandpa coming to our house in
Indiana to visit, by that time he was using a crutch under his right arm.
James W Baker had a short military stint during the Spanish American
War. A member of the mounted cavary
The stories I've heard about Great grandpa are, that he was a genius
when it came to fixing anything. He was a stone mason and helped to
build a lot of the now standing buildings in Booneville. He puzzled a lot
of people when it came to solving problems. He used mathmatics in
figuring out how to build and solve problems that no one else could
solve. He was a hard worker and well admired by all those that knew
him.
He had a way with animals I'm told. He had a cat and dog they would
line up when he milked the cow and wait until he told them it was okay
for them to drink out of their saucers. I have a picture of him milking
that cow and the cat sitting there waiting to be told he could drink his
milk!!
He was a perfectionist. One day his brother Rob wanted to go hunting
with him, he begged him to go, Jim said okay Rob you can go but if
you lag behind I'm leaving you. So they went hunting. Of course Rob
lagged behind so Jim said Rob what am I going to do with you, you're a
burden on Mom and Dad you're just no good for nothing, I guess I'll
just have to put you out of your misery, he then loaded his gun, poured
the powder in but dropped the ball into his hand. Aimed and pulled the
trigger, Rob fainted over dead and Jim thought he had killed him!!
Needless to say Rob didn't ask to go hunting with my great grandpa
anymore!!!!
Another story is his son Clarence got into trouble so he told him,
"Clarence what am I going to do with you, you just won't listen, I guess
I'll have to hang you", he took Clarence to the back of the barn, got a
rope, slung it over a tree, and said "Son you have any last words",
Clarence mumbled out, "Dad would it be alright if I Prayed"!!!!!
Needless to say he did not hang Clarence!!!
I don't mean to paint a bad picture of James Baker but he expected
people to use common sense and when they didn't he couldn't figure
them out!!!!
He made all of his kid memorize the ballad of California Joe.
Later in his life he moved from Kentucky to Ohio where he worked with
his sons At the Army Signal Corps in Dayton Ohio. His funeral was at
Elk Lick Baptist Church and he is buried beside his wife at Shepherd
Cemetery. I would have liked to have known my great grandpa I'm
sure I would have been a better person for it and I'm here to see that
his memory stays lit in the minds of his family.[sherrybaker.FTW]

Tillie, Kentucky
Jan 30, 1911
Mr. Major Bowman,
Dear Brother will answer your loving letter received several days ago was so sorry
you wasent any better but hope you are by this time.
I am feeling awful bad I have felt worse yesterday and last night than I ever felt. I
took an awful bad spell with my eye yesterday and last night than I have ever had. It
don't seem like it gets any better. Brother you wanted to know which way the railroad
was coming. It is coming from Jackson, KY right up the river (north Fork) and by
whitesburg and right on to the head of the river. It come's within six miles of my
house. Nan is at Whitesburg and has been there about five wks. Millard Collins got
mashed up in the mines and is not expected to live and Nan is waiting on him.
Luly has come out from VA on a visit she has two awful sweet little children. I wish
some of your children would stay in the house with you and help wait on you. I am
ashamed of Nerve and Lizzie that they don't stay and help wait on you more than
they do. If I was there and able, I would wait on you as long as I could stand up. If I
live till spring I am coming and you said you would come home with me and I want
you to be ready to come now.
I am glad your children comes to see you and I am glad Addie is there. Put your
trust in the Lord and do the best you can and the Lord and do the best you can and
the Lord will bring you through some way. We all have our sickness and death's and
troubles in the world but when we leave this world we will be out of our trouble. If we
only do right. I have cole and wood enough to do me this winter and I raised corn
enough to do me and I have nearly enough of everything else to do me. I don't have
no hard time working at all but I have a lonesome old time. You see I am scarce of
paper and I can't write much. Write every week or two and let me know how you are
doing.
Your Loving Sister
Clara Collins
Dear Mary Ann:
I want you to take good care of Major and write me a good long letter. I would
just give anything to see you
From this letter I have ascertained that Clara was pretty well educated. The letter is in
longhand and very neatly written. Her husband must have died leaving her a widow
and she makes no mention of any children or grandchildren.[sherrybaker.FTW]
