This Bible was given to Florence Thomas Oaks by her father Hayden Thomas [b. 1878 Owsley, d. 1956 Breathitt, m. Julia Ann Spencer]. The Bible had belonged to his father [John Breckenridge Thomas, m. Emily Shouse. John B. Thomas was the s/o Jessee Thomas & Martha Combs. Jessee Thomas was probably the s/o James Thomas who was the s/o Marchant Thomas.] Hayden's mother was a sister to Henry Thomas Shouse.

[The above children are in the HH of Jesse (b. 1816) & Martha Thomas on the 1850 & 1860 Owsley County census, and in Martha's HH in 1870. Jessee died in 1864 in the Civil War.]

NOTES from Marsha Oaks Horseman:

Martha Thomas was listed as living in the household of Henry Thomas Shouse in Census Record. Martha was apparently his niece.

Grandpa Floyd Shouse told me once that his grandfather was German and his grandmother was Dutch. They met on the boat coming to America. This must have been Peter Shouse's parents because there is record that Peter was born in Stokes Co NC in 1812. Malinda was born in Stokes Co NC in March 1814 and they were also married in Stokes Co.
