Descendants of Thomas Bowman
Note: This outline descendant tree is based primarily on the Thomas Bowman Family Bible, a King James Version translated out of the original Greek, (M. Carey & Son, Philadelphia, 1817). Actual entries in the Bible are highlighted by bold underlined text. Further family information has been gleaned from census records and the International Genealogical Index.
The following assumptions have been drawn from my interpretation of the Bible entries:
· Thomas Bowman is believed to be the son of Cornelius Bowman because there is an entry that states: Cornelius Bowman Senior was born in the y 1740 and died in January the 5th 1826.
· The twelve children shown are the only children of Thomas and Polly Moore because they are shown in consecutive order on the birth page of the family record with the exception of the two children who died in childhood.
· The safekeeping of this Bible passed from Thomas Bowman and his wife to their eldest daughter, Matilda, because there are a number of entries pertaining to the family of her second husband, John Miller.
· No entries were made in the Bible after 1906. The Bible eventually came into the possession of my great-grandmother, Martha Belle Morris, youngest daughter of Mary Bowman and William Morris. She made no entries into the Bible.
The Bible remains today as a family treasure of a Thomas Bowman descendant.

NOTE: John Miller had 6 children from a previous marriage when he married Matilda in 1856. In the 1850 Lee County,
VA census he is enumerated with wife Susannah. In the 1860 Jackson County, KY census he is enumerated with
second wife Matilda, all 6 of his children and one of her children (America, age 7). John Millers oldest daughter Lucinda
married James Anderson Frost and had a daughter Armina Elizabeth Frost b: October 24, 1865. Her birth is recorded
in the Bowman Bible.

Pasted in the Bible is a printed FAMILY TEMPERANCE SOCIETY Constitution text as follows:
This society shall be composed of T. Bowman and Mary Bowman and such other members of our family as shall hereunto subscribe their names.
In forming the constitution, we pledge ourselves to observe the following rules.
1. We will use no ardent spirits ourselves, nor suffer the use of them in our families, nor present them to our friends, or those in our employment, unless in cases of extreme necessity for medical purposes.
2. Those of us who are or shall hereafter become heads of families, solemnly agree to teach our households the principles of entire abstinence, and use our best endeavours to obtain their signature to this constitution.
3. A copy of this constitution shall be pasted in our family Bible, to which our children (if any) shall be often pointed as the act of their parents, and we solemnly enjoin it on them, as they revere our memories, sacredly to regard these our sentiments.
